In the edit

Flicker Free runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, 64-bit only, so whether you are on an M-series machine or an older Intel Mac, the plugin will load into your video editor.

  • Removes rolling flicker from fluorescent and LED lamps without wrecking the rest of the image.
  • Handles the flicker you get when filming computer monitors or screens in general.
  • Works on time-lapse video where light changes between shots cause a visible pulse.
  • Lets you apply the effect and render a short test section before committing to the full timeline.
  • Designed as a new, more powerful form of video deflickering — not just a simple brightness fix.
  • Covers flicker caused by the combination of electric lights and unsynchronised cameras.

Version 2.1.6 is the current release, and the package includes the installation and activation instructions. If you have footage that flickers and your editor’s built-in tools cannot quite sort it, this plugin is worth a look.

Apply it to your worst flicker first

The first thing to do after installing Flicker Free is to open your editor and find the plugin in the effects or filters panel. Apply it to a short clip that shows the worst flicker you have, not a clean shot. Set a small in and out point — maybe ten or fifteen seconds — and try each preset briefly. The plugin ships with a set of presets designed for different flicker sources, so you can cycle through them and watch the preview without touching any sliders yet. Once you find a preset that calms the flicker, render that short section and check the result at full resolution. That test render saves time later.

Keep your original clip on a duplicate track or duplicate the timeline sequence before applying the plugin. If you need to tweak settings later, you can always go back to the clean source and start again without digging through undo history.

Runs natively on Apple Silicon Macs

Flicker Free 2.1.6 is a 64-bit plugin and supports both ARM and x86 architectures. That means it loads natively on Apple Silicon Macs through Rosetta 2 or directly depending on how your host app is set up, and it runs on Intel Macs without any extra steps. The interface is in English, and the install instructions are included in the package you download. The plugin itself works inside your host application — Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Avid, DaVinci Resolve or any other OpenFX compatible app — so you do not get a standalone window. It appears as an effect you drag onto a clip.

Because it analyses frames while processing, you will see the plugin working frame by frame during a render. It is not a real-time preview effect on most systems, so expect to render to see the full correction. That is normal for this kind of analysis-based plugin.

Avoid processing your full timeline at once

A common mistake is applying Flicker Free to the entire timeline at once without testing a short section first. The plugin is powerful, but it processes every frame, so a full-length timeline render can take a while if you have not dialled in the right settings. Always test on a ten-second cut before committing.

Another misstep is expecting it to fix flicker that comes from compression artefacts or sensor readout noise. Flicker Free targets flicker caused by light sources and unsynchronised cameras — fluorescent and LED rolling flicker, time-lapse pulsing, monitor flicker. It is not a general video noise reducer or a fix for badly encoded footage.

Some users also forget to check whether the flicker is actually visible in the final export. If you are viewing footage on a monitor that refreshes at a different rate, you might see flicker that is not in the file itself. Before reaching for the plugin, export a short clip and watch it on a different screen or device.

Lastly, beginners sometimes stack multiple instances of Flicker Free on the same clip, thinking more will give a cleaner result. One instance with the right preset is almost always enough. Adding a second instance can soften the image and increase render time for no real gain.

Installation and activation are now in the package

Version 2.1.6 is the current release, and it includes the installation and activation instructions right in the package. That means less time hunting for a readme file or a separate serial number document. The plugin itself remains a single effect you apply to clips in your timeline, and the core workflow — apply, test, render — stays the same across updates.

For users who have been on an earlier build, the main change in 2.1.6 is the packaging. The activation method has been updated, and the plugin is delivered ready to use with the included instructions. If you have been putting off an upgrade because you were worried about reconfiguring your effects library, this version is straightforward: install, point your editor to the plugin folder if needed, and carry on editing.

The architecture support is another practical change. Flicker Free 2.1.6 runs on both ARM and x86 Macs, so it works on the latest Apple Silicon machines and on older Intel models. That means if you switch Macs during a project or work across two different systems, the plugin behaves the same way on both.
