In the edit

Version 1.0.0 of the Plugin Alliance Brainworx bx_mastering studio brings a standalone mastering app to the Mac, built as the successor to mastering.studio. It handles unlimited masters and works entirely outside a digital audio workstation, which is the point for anyone who wants to get tracks finished without opening a full DAW session.

  1. Load a mix. The app opens any stereo file you throw at it. No track count limits, no session setup — just a file browser and a waveform.
  2. Pick a style. The built-in mastering style creator offers a set of starting points. Tweak EQ, compression and limiting per style, or build your own from scratch.
  3. Adjust and listen. The Brainworx processing chain runs in real time. Solo bands, check levels, compare before and after.
  4. Export. Streaming-ready output is a single click. The app handles format and loudness targets so you can send masters straight to distribution.

What stayed the same? The core is still Brainworx processing — the same attention to bus compression and stereo imaging that made mastering.studio a working tool. The difference is this version runs as a standalone Mac application with no DAW required, and it ships with a style system that speeds up the first pass on a new track.

A session with bx_mastering studio, start to finish

I had a rough bounce of a podcast intro sitting on my desktop — a friend's show, recorded in GarageBand, levelled okay but flat. No time to open Logic, no desire to route anything. Double-clicked the bx_mastering studio icon, dragged the file into the window, and the waveform appeared in a few seconds. That immediate feedback — seeing your audio without waiting for a session to load — is the whole point of a standalone app.

First thing I did was cycle through the built-in styles. The mastering style creator has a handful of presets named after genres and loudness targets. I landed on one meant for spoken word, which tightened the low end without touching the voice. From there, I nudged the compression threshold down a couple of dB and backed off the limiting until the gain reduction hovered where it felt natural. The Brainworx processing responds in real time, so you hear exactly what you're doing as you drag.

After a few passes I soloed the low band to check if the chair rumble was still there — it wasn't. Switched back to full spectrum, hit the A/B compare a couple of times, and the difference was clear without being overdone. Export took one click. The app handled the loudness normalisation for me, and the file came out ready to drop into a hosting service. No bounce dialogue, no format decisions unless you want them.

The whole thing took maybe eight minutes, including the listening breaks. That's the use case: a fast, focused mastering pass without a DAW in sight.

What it asks of your Mac

bx_mastering studio runs on macOS 12 or later and supports both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. That covers everything from an M1 MacBook Air to an older Intel iMac still on Monterey. The app is a single window, no plugin host overhead, so it stays out of the way of other work. No internet connection is needed once it's installed, which matters if you work on the move. Language support is English.

Installation is the standard Mac procedure — drag the app to Applications, launch, and authorise in System Settings if macOS asks. No additional licence manager or background service runs after that.

The cloud-free mastering alternative to LANDR

There are a few ways to master without a full DAW on macOS, and each one takes a different approach.

LANDR is the cloud-based alternative. You upload a mix, their servers process it, and you download a mastered file. bx_mastering studio keeps everything local — your audio never leaves the machine, and you can tweak the chain in real time. LANDR is faster if you don't want to touch any controls; bx_mastering studio is faster if you want to hear what the processing is doing while you adjust it.

Audiofile Engineering Triumph is a more traditional batch processor for audio files. It handles loudness normalisation, sample rate conversion and file export across many tracks at once, but it doesn't have a dedicated mastering chain with EQ and compression bands you can solo. bx_mastering studio is built for a single master at a time, with a processing section that behaves more like a console channel than a utility tool.

GarageBand itself can be pressed into mastering service with its built-in compressor and EQ, but the workflow is clunky — you have to create a project, set up a mastering preset on the output channel, and bounce manually. bx_mastering studio removes every one of those steps. If you're already in GarageBand for recording, the bx app works as a dedicated mastering stage after the mix is done.

None of these are wrong choices. It depends on whether you want automation, batch processing, or a hands-on chain that stays on your drive.
