In the edit

You have just shot a wedding in mixed light and the memory card is full of portraits that need consistent skin tones, a sky swap here and there, and maybe a bit of background blur to save a cluttered backdrop. Luminar AI is the kind of tool that lets you batch through that work without opening a full layer-based editor for every frame. It handles common retouching tasks automatically, so you spend time on the shots that matter rather than the repetitive ones.

Runs on High Sierra and newer, Intel or Apple Silicon

  • macOS 10.13.6 or later
  • Intel or Apple Silicon (runs natively on both)
  • Interface in English, German, Spanish, Italian, French, Japanese and more

If your Mac is a few years old but still on High Sierra or newer, you are covered. The app works as a standalone editor or as a plugin, which makes it flexible for existing workflows.

One-slider Accent AI, Sky AI, and automated portrait retouching

The whole pitch is automation: Accent AI adjusts light and colour with one slider, Sky AI swaps a grey sky for something more dramatic, and Body AI or Face AI handle retouching that would otherwise take several minutes per portrait. Composition AI crops according to rule-of-thirds or other guides, and Bokeh AI fakes a shallow depth of field when the lens could not quite deliver it. It is not a replacement for a raw developer, but it is a fast second pass for the shots that need a lift.

Luminar AI suits a few specific Mac user types particularly well. Portrait photographers get the most immediate value because the dedicated Face AI, Skin AI and Iris AI tools cut down per-image retouching time. Wedding and event shooters benefit from the Atmosphere AI and Sky AI features when weather or location lets them down. For hobbyists who shoot landscapes or travel, the Composition AI and Accent AI sliders offer a quick way to bring out the best in a scene without learning curves. If your workflow involves handing over edited images in bulk, the automation here keeps a consistent look across a set.

Native support for both Intel and M-series Macs

The app asks for macOS 10.13.6 or later, which covers everything from High Sierra through to the current releases. It runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs natively, so no translation layer is needed on an M-series machine. The disk image mounts cleanly, and the install steps are straightforward: mount, open the Gatekeeper-friendly app, confirm in Terminal, drag to Applications, then launch. The interface supports eleven languages, so if you prefer working in Dutch, Korean or Japanese, that option is there from the start.

Gatekeeper fix: the Terminal command that lets it open

The most frequent hiccup people hit is Gatekeeper blocking the app on first launch. The install instructions include a Terminal step for a reason: press Enter after the command and the app opens without further warnings. If you skip that step, the system may refuse to open the app outright. Just run the step again and it clears.

Another thing to watch is the disk image itself. If you try to launch the app directly from the mounted image instead of dragging it to Applications first, some features may behave oddly or the app may not retain its settings between sessions. Always copy it to the Applications folder before opening it.

Users coming from a layer-based editor sometimes expect Luminar AI to offer manual masking or brush tools for every adjustment. It does not work that way. The AI handles selections internally, so if you are used to painting in a sky replacement by hand, the approach here is different. Let the AI do its pass, then fine-tune with the sliders available. It takes a few tries to trust the automation, but after a batch or two it clicks.

Installing on a Mac

  1. Mount the disk image and launch the app marked as Open Gatekeeper friendly.
  2. Press Enter in Terminal to bypass Gatekeeper.
  3. Drag the app to the Applications folder.
  4. Open the app from Applications.
