In the edit

You're deep into a dialogue edit, cutting room tone and matching takes while the clock ticks. That's where Nuendo earns its keep. Steinberg's audio post-production workstation is built for speed and precision in film, television, games, and immersive audio. This page looks at whether your Mac can run it, then what you get.

Dialogue editing that keeps up with fast turnaround

  • Dialogue editing with tools that keep up with fast turnaround
  • Surround and immersive audio work for modern formats
  • Game audio, where routing and Quick Link behaviour matter
  • Folder tracks and group channel workflows that stay organised

Runs on macOS 11 or later, Intel and Apple Silicon

  • It runs on macOS 11 or later, and works on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs

  • Version 15.0.30, updated 2026-06-03, brings fixes and enhancements across the app

Spend the first hour checking audio hardware and preferences

Once Nuendo 15.0.30 is up and running, give yourself an hour to walk through the basics before you jump into a live project. Open the Preferences panel and check your audio hardware is set to the right driver. If you're on a Mac with multiple audio interfaces, the app picks up the system default, so it's worth confirming the correct one is selected before you hit record.

Import a short test session — something with a few dialogue tracks, some ambience and a couple of spot effects. This lets you feel the Comp Tool with Group Editing changes and see how the folder tracks and Group Channel routing behave with your own material. Try creating a new folder track and assigning a group channel to it. The updated behaviour in 15.0.30 means less clicking around when you want to send several tracks through one bus.

If you work with MIDI ports or channels, take a moment to test the Quick Link adjustments. Connect a controller, set up a Quick Link and check that the MIDI port or channel assignment sticks. The fix in this release makes that workflow more predictable, especially when you switch between projects.

Drag audio straight from Soundly or BaseHead into tracks

Nuendo sits comfortably alongside the rest of your audio toolkit. If you use Soundly or BaseHead for sound effects, you can drag audio straight from those browsers into a Nuendo track without converting formats first. The app handles common broadcast WAV files natively, so you don't need to bounce through a separate converter.

On the video side, you can send picture from your editing timeline — whether it's from DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro or Avid Media Composer — via an OMF or AAF export. Nuendo imports these timelines with markers and metadata intact, which saves you from rebuilding sync points by hand. For game audio, you can route assets out of Wwise or FMOD and bring them into Nuendo for final mixing and mastering.

macOS features like Spaces and Stage Manager work fine alongside Nuendo. I keep the MixConsole on one Space and the Project window on another, then swipe between them. The app's windowing respects macOS split view too, which is handy when you want the MediaBay open alongside your timeline on a single screen.

Freelance sound editor receives weekly OMFs for a six-episode drama

Consider a freelance sound editor who takes on a six-episode drama series. They receive OMFs from the picture editor each week, each one packed with dialogue, a guide track and a handful of production sound takes. The first thing they do is open the OMF in Nuendo and use the Comp Tool to build a single clean dialogue track from the best takes. With the Group Editing fix in 15.0.30, they can comp multiple tracks at once, matching edits across all takes without losing sync.

Once the dialogue is locked, they bring in ambience and Foley from a sound library. The folder track routing lets them group all ambience tracks under one folder and send them through a single reverb bus. When the episode is ready for a rough mix, they export stems directly from the Project window. The whole process, from OMF import to stem export, stays inside Nuendo, with no need to bounce between applications.

Audio interface not recognised? Check macOS System Settings > Sound

A few things trip people up in the first week. Here are the ones I hear about most, with straightforward fixes.

  • Audio interface not recognised. If Nuendo doesn't see your interface, go to macOS System Settings > Sound > Input and Output and confirm the device is selected there first. Then restart Nuendo. If it still doesn't show, try a different USB or Thunderbolt cable — faulty cables are more common than you'd think.
  • Quick Link not responding. After the 15.0.30 update, some users find Quick Link assignments don't stick. Open the Quick Link panel, delete the existing assignment, then create a new one. Make sure the MIDI port and channel are set to the exact values you need. Save the project, close and reopen it to confirm the assignment holds.
  • Direct Offline Processing interface looks wrong. If you open Direct Offline Processing with VST Bass Amp or VST Amp Rack and the UI appears broken or blank, close the plug-in window, restart Nuendo, then try again. The 15.0.30 update addressed this, so a clean restart usually resolves it.
  • Group Channel routing on folder tracks behaves unexpectedly. When you assign a Group Channel to a folder track, check that the folder track itself isn't already routed to another bus. Nuendo 15.0.30 changed how this works, so a folder track with a pre-existing route can override the new Group Channel assignment. Clear the folder track's output routing first, then assign the Group Channel.
  • Score Editor freezes with locked global tracks. If you're editing a score and the project contains a locked global track, the Score Editor can hang. Unlock the global track temporarily while you work on the score, then lock it again when you're done. This was a known issue before the 15.0.30 fix, and the update resolved it, but if you imported a project from an older version, the lock might still cause trouble. Double-click the lock icon on the global track to unlock it.

Most of these snags clear up once you know what to look for. Nuendo 15.0.30 is a solid update, and a few minutes of setup on day one saves you from hunting around mid-session.
