In the edit
Adobe XD handles everything from wireframes to interactive prototypes in one app. A single project for a client’s booking flow can go from static artboards to a tap-through prototype with auto-animate and responsive resize, without leaving the tool.
Design the screens
Lay out the booking form, confirmation page and error states using repeat grid for the date picker and content-aware layout to keep text and buttons aligned when the viewport changes.
Link the interactions
Drag connectors between artboards to define taps and transitions. Auto-animate makes the move from calendar to confirmation feel natural, and you can preview it on a phone before sharing.
Share and get feedback
Publish a shareable link so the client can comment on specific elements in the browser. The same link works for developers inspecting spacing and colours without exporting assets manually.
Your Monday morning session from coffee to confirmation
Monday morning, coffee in hand, you open Adobe XD and the last project loads exactly as you left it. The artboards for a restaurant booking app are laid out across the canvas — home screen, search results, reservation form, confirmation. The repeat grid for the time slots is already in place, so you adjust the spacing and let the grid populate the remaining cells. That takes about thirty seconds.
Next comes the reservation form. You drop in text fields, a date picker and a submit button. Content-aware layout keeps the button anchored to the bottom of the card, so if the client later asks for an extra field, everything shifts without breaking alignment. You duplicate the artboard to create the confirmation screen and the error state — one tap to copy, then a quick edit of the copy and the illustration.
With the screens ready, you switch to prototyping mode. The first interaction is straightforward: tap the search result, transition to the restaurant page. You drag the lightning bolt from the result artboard to the restaurant artboard and choose a fade transition. Then you add the booking flow: tap a time slot, transition to the form; tap submit, transition to confirmation. Auto-animate handles the smooth scaling of the date picker as it moves from calendar to confirmation summary.
Before sharing, you preview the prototype on your Mac. The cursor becomes a finger, and you tap through the flow as a user would. The transitions feel right, but the error state is missing a back button. You fix it, preview again, and publish a shareable link. The client gets the link, taps through on their own phone, and leaves a comment on the confirmation screen asking for a larger font. You adjust it in under a minute.
What to know before installing XD on your Mac
A few things come up often when someone is deciding whether to add XD to their Mac. Here are the answers that usually help.
Can I open Sketch or Figma files in XD?
XD imports SVG and bitmap images directly. For Sketch files, you can export to SVG from Sketch and bring those in. Figma exports to SVG or PDF, which XD handles. It is not a one-click import, but for most design work the vector data comes through cleanly.
Does XD work offline?
Yes. You design and prototype entirely on your Mac without an internet connection.
Can I hand off designs to developers who do not use XD?
Developers can open the shareable link in any browser. They see the artboards, the specs for spacing, colours and fonts, and they can inspect individual elements without installing anything. You can also export assets as PNG, SVG, PDF or JPG directly from the app.
Is XD good for large projects with many screens?
XD handles projects with dozens of artboards well. The repeat grid and symbols keep things consistent, and the layers panel stays organised if you name your artboards from the start. For very large projects, linking multiple XD files through shared components keeps performance predictable.
Copy vectors from Photoshop and search Adobe Stock without leaving XD
If you use Photoshop or Illustrator for icons, illustrations or photo comps, you can copy vectors and bitmaps straight into XD.
Adobe Stock integration means you can search for and license images, icons and templates without leaving XD. The stock assets appear directly in your library and are ready to drop onto artboards.
On the macOS side, XD supports standard gestures and shortcuts. Two-finger scroll pans the canvas, pinch zooms in and out, and Command-Z undoes the last action. You can drag assets from Finder into the artboard — SVG files, PNGs, JPGs — and they land at the correct size. The Mac version also supports the Touch Bar on compatible models, giving quick access to tools and alignment options.
For team collaboration, XD works with shared documents in the cloud. Multiple people can open the same file, add comments and see changes in real time. The macOS share sheet lets you send a prototype link straight from the app via Mail, Messages or AirDrop.
How Nadia prototypes a mobile app in a week with XD
Nadia is a freelance product designer based in London. She works with early-stage startups that need a mobile app designed and prototyped in a week. Her process is fast and iterative: she sketches on paper, then jumps straight into XD to build low-fidelity wireframes.
For a recent client building a fitness tracking app, she used repeat grid to lay out a week of workout cards, then linked each card to a detail screen with auto-animate. The client reviewed the prototype on their phone and asked for a progress chart on the dashboard. Nadia duplicated the dashboard artboard, added a chart from Illustrator, and updated the shareable link. The client saw the change within minutes.
She also used shared components across multiple XD files: the navigation bar, buttons and colour palette lived in one library file, so when the client decided to change the primary colour from blue to green, Nadia updated it once and every artboard in every file reflected the change. That saved her an afternoon of manual updates and kept the client happy.
