In the edit

Black Stack is a cyber-occult deckbuilding roguelite where you breach a corporate megastructure one hand at a time.

Deckbuilding risks in a cyber-occult megastructure

It’s a deckbuilding roguelite with a cyber-occult theme. You build a deck, take risks, and push deeper into a megastructure controlled by a faceless corporation. The 0.30.1 update added confetti and extra punch to major wager wins, so the big payouts feel like they should.

What content does the current version include?

Version 0.30.1 is a full playable build with multiple runs, unlockable cards, and escalating stakes. The game uses music as its only audio language, which keeps the atmosphere tight. It’s been tested on macOS Tahoe with a Mac mini 2024 M4 and runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel hardware.

Which languages and platforms are supported?

The Steam release ships a universal build covering arm64 and x86_64. Interface languages include English, Russian, German, Arabic, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Vietnamese, Greek, Danish, Indonesian, Spanish, Italian, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Korean, Malay, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Finnish, French, Czech, Swedish, and Japanese.

A run from scratch: breaching the first floor

Start a new run and you’ll be met with a hand of basic cards and a map of the megastructure’s lower floors. Your first few choices are about survival: pick a path that avoids elite encounters until you’ve built a few reliable damage cards. Every node you land on offers a wager — risk some of your current resources for a chance at a better card or a stat boost. The key is knowing when to fold. Early on, I tend to take safe wagers that don’t cost me my best cards, and save the high-stakes gambles for when I have a solid backup plan. By floor three, if you’ve managed to snag a couple of graft tech tree upgrades (the 0.30.1 fix made these work properly with wager mini and divine rolls during combat), you can start leaning into a specific synergy — maybe a poison build or a direct damage stack. The run ends when you either reach the floor boss or your deck runs out of steam. Every loss teaches you something about the next path.

A strategy player’s approach to the graft tech tree

I know a few players who treat Black Stack less like a roguelite and more like a puzzle optimisation problem. One friend spends his first few runs mapping out which graft upgrades unlock the most efficient card combos. He’ll skip a tempting rare card if it doesn’t fit the tech tree path he’s aiming for. For him, the satisfaction comes from seeing a plan come together across three or four floors — not from the big win itself, but from the chain of decisions that made it possible. The 0.30.1 fix to the graft tech tree upgrades was exactly what he needed; before the patch, some of his carefully planned runs broke because the wager mechanics didn’t interact properly with his upgrades. Now he can push deeper into the megastructure with the confidence that his build won’t fall apart at the first divine roll.

Questions I actually get

Does Black Stack work on macOS 11 or newer?

Yes. On Apple Silicon Macs you need macOS 13.0 or later; on Intel Macs, macOS 11.0 or later works. Both architectures are supported, along with 2 GB RAM and 3 GB of free storage.

Installing on a Mac

  1. Open the downloaded disk image.
  2. Drag the app to the Applications folder alias.
  3. Once copying finishes, launch the app from Launchpad.

Tip: If macOS warns about an unidentified developer, right-click the app and choose Open from the shortcut menu.
