In the edit
CHUCHEL is a comedy adventure game from Amanita Design, the studio behind Machinarium and Samorost. It lands on a Mac as a light-hearted break between editing sessions, with no heavy system demands and a tone that suits a quick laugh. Here is what you can expect from the download.
- Quirky animation and slapstick humour that do not take themselves seriously
- Numerous puzzles and challenges spread across the game, each one tied to the weird world CHUCHEL lives in
- Interaction with many odd characters, all drawn in that signature Amanita style
- Music accompaniment by DVA, which sets the playful mood without getting in the way
- Built for x86 64-bit architecture, so it runs fine on Intel Macs and through Rosetta on Apple Silicon
- Interface in English, with no language switching needed
It fits nicely next to the other apps on your Mac — something to open when you need a break from Lightroom or Final Cut, not another tool to master. Just mount the disk image, run the installer and pick your Applications folder.
DRM-free and ready to play without a launcher
A few things tend to come up when people look at CHUCHEL for the first time. The game is DRM-free, which means no extra launcher or online check — you mount the disk image, install, and play whenever you like. No account needed, no internet requirement after setup. The whole thing sits quietly in your Applications folder until you want it.
The puzzles are original to this game, not recycled from earlier Amanita titles. If you have played Machinarium or Botanicula you will recognise the hand-drawn charm, but the problems here are built around CHUCHEL's own slapstick logic. Some challenges involve timing, others ask you to figure out what odd character wants what — standard adventure fare, but delivered with the studio's trademark animation.
Music by DVA runs through the whole experience, and there is no spoken dialogue. Everything is communicated through the character's expressions and the world around them. That keeps the file size reasonable and means you can play with the sound down if you are editing in the next room.
More physical comedy and less atmospheric exploration than Samorost 3
If you already have Samorost 3 on your Mac, you know Amanita's approach to quiet, visual storytelling. CHUCHEL is louder and messier — more physical comedy, less atmospheric exploration. The puzzles are still logical but the tone is intentionally ridiculous, closer to a cartoon than a meditation.
Gorogoa is another puzzle game that runs on Mac, and it shares the hand-painted art style. Where Gorogoa is a single, contained illusion you untangle panel by panel, CHUCHEL moves through multiple scenes with a cast of characters. You interact with the world directly rather than solving one layered image. The humour is also entirely different — Gorogoa is mysterious, CHUCHEL is deliberately daft.
Day of the Tentacle Remastered offers the same kind of point-and-click puzzle solving with a comedic tone, but it is a remaster of a 90s classic with voice acting and a longer campaign. CHUCHEL is shorter, newer and built around the kind of expressive animation that only Amanita does. It does not ask for the same time investment, which is useful when you only have half an hour between client proofs.
Runs natively on Intel Macs and smoothly on Apple Silicon via Rosetta 2
The game is built for x86 64-bit architecture. On Intel Macs it runs natively. On Apple Silicon models it works through Rosetta 2, which handles this kind of game without any issue — the system requirements are modest enough that the translation layer does not get in the way. The installer is the same on either architecture, just mount the disk image and run it.
English is the only interface language, which is fine for a game that relies on animation and sound rather than reading. The music by DVA is the main audio element, so no voice files take up space. The whole installation stays compact enough to sit alongside your photography tools without eating into drive space you might need for a busy wedding season.
Mac it needs
- macOS: not specified by the developer
- Architecture: Intel (x86 64-bit) and Apple Silicon via Rosetta 2
- Interface language: English
Questions I actually get
Does CHUCHEL run on Apple Silicon Macs?
CHUCHEL is built for x86 64-bit architecture, so it runs on Intel Macs natively and on Apple Silicon Macs through Rosetta 2.
Installing on a Mac
- Mount the downloaded disk image.
- Run the standard installer.
- Choose the installation location at the end of setup.
